Route description

Leg 1:     Start of leg GR: SN609088
Starting at Borth Staion, enter the platform and take a moment to look at the view across Cors Fochno to the hills beyond. Then walk down the platform in the southerly Aberystwyth direction on to a footpath which within af few yards takes you onto a lane and a level crossing.

Leg 2:  Leg distance 0.5 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN609900
Stop, look and listen for trains and if all is clear cross the railway and take the tarmac path to the church you see ahead. At the church turn left through the car park and look for the pedestrian gate ahead of you. Go through the gate onto the grassy path and proceed along it until you get to the embankment of the Afon Leri. At the church car park look for the small pets Cemetery in front of the graveyard.Along the grassy path look out for the slate seat with the plaque to Uppingham School which evacuated to Borth in 1866 and 1867 owing to a typhoid epidemic in their own locality in England.

Leg 3:  Leg distance 0.8 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN616898
When you arrive at the river embankment turn immediately left onto the path along it and proceed northwards, downstream, for just over three quarters of a mile until you come to a metal gate with a wooden pedestrian gate on its left. The riverbank is full of interest especially for birdwatchers though on this section the river itself is not very obvious owing to the adjoing tall reed beds.

Leg 4:  Leg distance 1.0 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN616911
Pass the metal gate to walk further along the embankment. At this point you leave the reed beds adjoining the river and get a better view of the river itself. The riverbank flows through the National Nature Reserve and will be of great interest to birdwatchers . Walk on for a mile until you arrive at the bridge which carries the path and the railway across the afon Leri

Leg 5:  Leg distance 0.1 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN616929
Cross the bridge and go through the two metal pedestrian gates to arrive on the B4353 road. Turn left to cross the level crossing and carefully walk pproximately 200 yards along the road to a boatyard ,on the way crossing the road bridge over the river.

Leg 6:  Leg distance 0.3 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN616931
A few yards into the entrance drive of the boatyard you will see a metal gate on the left, just after a bungalow. Go through the gate and follow the track for 500 yards down to the estuary of the Dyfi with its dramatic view.

Leg 7:  Leg distance 0.6 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN616936
Turn left along the track bounding the salt marsh and when it fades out continue along the beach past the vehicle entrance to the beach, from which point after about 200 yards you will arrive at the signpost indicating the Visitor Centre up along some wooden steps.

Leg 8:  Leg distance 0.4 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN610942
Follow the path 100 yards to the visitor centre and have a look around. Then emerge at the far side of the visitor centre to see the pedestrian gate which is the start of the Dune Walk. Walk the path which turns into a boardwalk as it ascends the dunes, to the top of the boardwalk. At this point take a moment to look at the magnificent views of the coast, the estuary, Cors Fochno and the hills to the north and east.

Leg 9:  Leg distance 0.5 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN605937
From the top of the boardwalk take the sandy path down onto the beach. At the beach turn left in the direction of Borth. After about 600 yards you will be opposite an old flat roofed brick building on your left. Walk up the beach and the pebble bank to arrive at the track which is to the right of the brick building.

Leg 10:  Leg distance 0.7 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN606930
Follow the track across the golf course, keeping an eye out for playing golfers, to arrive at an unclassified road. Cross the road onto another track between the houses and after 900 yards you will arrive at the boatyard.

Leg 11:  Leg distance 1.4 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN617931
At the boatyard retrace your original route, over the river bridge, to the level crossing, then immediatley turn right to go through the metal kissing gate. Follow the path as it goes over the river footbridge by the side of the railway then along the Leri bank the way you came, for a mile. As you have already walked this long stretch it may feel a little tedious but there is plenty of bird life around the marshes and the river. At the point 50 yards short of the gate across the bank you will see a track going right in the direction of the coast.

Leg 12:  Leg distance 0.5 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN616912
Trun right on to the track. This track takes you through the adjoining reeds and wetland which provides an ideal habitat for marshland birds. As you get to the railway crossing, stop, look and listen. If all is well cross the railway and continue on the track as it crosses the golf course to the main road.

Leg 13:  Leg distance 0.7 mile(s)   Start of leg GR: SN608911
Cross the road and go through the pedestrian gate to ascend on to the sea embankment. Walk along the embankment towards Borth and when you are opposite the road to the station descend the steps and go a final 100 yards to your start point at the station
